Earth Day Sharing - Our Class Skit

Our class brought our own version of a children's storybook called "Michael Recycle" to Churchill today at our Earth Day sharing. (Yes, if you are keeping track, this is the first sharing or school wide event this year that our class was not responsible for hosting...for a change! :) Everyone played a role, either reciting the poem, or acting it out.  The story didn't totally work for our sharing, so we brainstormed some ideas, and put them together to come up with the script below.  We hope to record the whole thing for parents later on, but the main thing was that we delivered it today, and received a ton of praise for how we did.  The speakers, the actors...everyone was equally important, and they all rose to the occasion, but special mention should go to Owen, for his excellent portrayal of Michael Recycle!
On an environmental theme, we looked at, and debriefed three quick videos today, and discussed how predictions of the future may look dreary at times, but that humans can solve all sorts of problems, and it is up to all of us to play a role so that predictions do not come true in regards to the environment.
Check out the videos, and look over our script if you want...

Michael Recycle Skit - 2019
Nellah
There once was a school called Churchill Alternative Public
Where garbage piled up and the smell made kids quite sick
It never smelled fresh, the air was all hazy,
But the students did nothing, they got rather lazy.
Dylan
And then something happened, that none could explain.
It wasn’t a bird, and is wasn’t a plane.
A green-caped crusader, soared through the air.
With a backwards peaked hat on top of his hair.
Nico
He landed on the playground, with style and class,
And narrowly avoided stepping in piles of trash.
He brushed off his suit, and stomped on his feet,
And grinned at the students who he’d come to meet
Thomas
“I’m Michael Recycle - and I have a plan,
But I need your help, every woman and man.
The sky and the river are smelly and brown.
Soon fifty-foot bugs will take over your town!”
“You’ve got to recycle, you’ve got to act soon!
Before all your trash reaches up to the moon.
Then crushing a can he gave them a wink…
And vanished from sight before they could blink!”
Abbey
Stacey exclaimed to her friend Andrew,
“Did you happen to hear what that boy said to do?”
“Clean up and recycle-how hard can it be?
A clean and green school would be lovely to see.”
Sam
They decided that they would all - do what they can.
To make better choices, - they came up with a plan.
In order to keep - the Earth green and nice
They would ask Michael - to give them advice

Blue vs Black
<each bin is put in the circle.  Students pick up items from the circle, and go to throw the in a bin (incorrectly).
Michael comes in and says>
Ezra
“Stop right there - and take all those things back,
Sort plastic in the blue bin - and paper in black
If you take time to become - a re-cycling master
We just might avoid - environmental disaster”
<Michael moves off>

Compost vs Garbage
<Students sitting down with lunch boxes.  One stands and walks to the garbage can to throw out a core...Michael comes in and shows a compost bin. >
Oliver
“Please stop right now - with what you’re doing there
Don’t throw out a core - from an apple or pear!
What we must do - is not even debatable,
We must compost all items - that are bio-degradable”
<Michael moves off>

Pencil Sharpening
A student gets up from doodling with a pretty good pencil to use an electric sharpener.  Michael comes in with a notepad and a hand sharpener in his belt.
Thomas
“Pull out that pencil - and stop all that noise,
Here’s my advice to all - girls and boys.
If your pencil makes marks,- and can still draw a line
There is no need to be sharpening - all of the time.”

“Pencils come from wood, and that comes from trees,
So pro-tect our forest, - sharpen pencils less please.
Stop sharpening pencils - just to make one that’s small
When trees are cut down - it matters to us all”

“And when you lead is dull and your pencil needs sharpening
Please don’t use those devices - that make all - our - ears - ring
Choose a sharpener that you power with only your hand
Then you’ll be making a choice that will pro-tect our land”

Lights Off
Students in the sharing circle have tiny lamp and some chromeboooks, and they stand up and start to walk  to go to another area in the circle to sit down and talk in a circle.
<Michael comes over and gets in front of them>
Ezra
“Wait!  ...
I have something to tell you, - and it won’t be funny
And it isn’t just all about - saving some money
This advice will help protect us all - from certain DOOM
Turn off all  devices and lights - before leaving a room!”
<Michael leaves the circle>
Plastic Spoon/fork
<Students are eating lunches and they are all holding plastic straws, one asks a teacher for a plastic fork.  Michael comes in and grabs their plastic items…>
Oliver
Hold on…
Disposable plastic utensils and dishes
Poison our Earth and it starts with the fishes
Tiny micro plastics - are now found in animal cells
And this has become - a real warning bell
Plastic in the ocean - has caused a big mess
And what we all need to do - is to use plastic less
So please make the effort - and think before you choose
The best choice is for items - that you can easily reuse!”
<Michael gives out metal forks, paper straws, etc, then moves out of the circle>
Kayla
When Michael came back, to visit the school,
He didn’t despair, or act like a fool
For everything looked clean and brand new,
The sky and the river were again bright blue
Ezra
You made the right choices, be proud of yourself
Now you are thinking about our whole planet’s health
Keep up the good work, treat the Earth like you care
And you’ll ensure a future where we can all breathe clean air.”
Nellah
So from all of us, to all of you
In order to keep our Earth green and blue
Remember these tips that you learned from Michael
Think of the planet -Reduce -Reuse -Recycle!
