Chromebook Journey

We are starting a bit of a Chromebook Journey this week as we all get familiar with our new set of class Chromebooks.  Each student will be assigned a Chromebook for use during structured times over the remainder of the year, and they will be responsible for the care, and use of it.  There will be students from Room 310 who are sharing each Chromebook as well.
This will allow students more access to the Google accounts that they already are using, and it will enable us to be slightly more creative in our use of technology in the class.  These are meant to be tools, not toys, and as such we will be reviewing the appropriate use of them prior to starting this week.  There will be no unsupervised use of the Chromebooks, and no unsupervised access to the internet, so they will be primarily accessed during math, language, and science/social studies periods.
This is a great learning opportunity for us, and we are excited about it.

Some useful information for Chromebook use can be found at this link...

Happy March Break

Before we all head off to celebrate March Break, St. Paddy's Day (ask your child about the true story of St. Patrick) and Pi day (3/14...see the previous post for more on this) I have to acknowledge some accomplishments of the class this past week.
First and foremost I must mention the great results of our big "week of work" experiment.  We had perfect returns of all work on two days out of four, and only one student who forgot their work on two of the days!  This is far better than our usual 7 - 10 students who do not hand in literacy logs each Friday.  I joked that they got so into the work (they are even a bit excited about the work being given today) that we should do it every day for the rest of the year.  Some cheered, some cried, in the end I think we may try this week again, but not every day.  The task was really to return some finished work each day, and they passed with flying colours!  Well done all around.  (hopefully they return the toughest one, the one that goes home today, and needs to be remembered after the break!!!)

Secondly I should mention that the Winter Activity Day for our tree families was a huge success, thanks to the efforts of the students in Room 308.  We came up with the ideas collaboratively with our math buddies in 301, and tested them out with our buddies.  On the day of the event we set up the stations, and then helped guide the tree families through the event for the 70 minutes we were on the yard.  I had tons of flattering feedback about the event, the nurturing approaches that the 6's demonstrated while helping the kinders and primaries.  Overall they class shone on that day, and we all should be proud of their efforts!

Also I would like to acknowledge the participation of 15 students in the class who  went with Shannon and I to the triple ball tournament at Summit yesterday.  They were the model of sportsmanship, and participated with enthusiasm throughout the event.  They did us proud as representatives of Churchill, and they did themselves proud, while having a ton of fun in the process.

I wish everyone a happy holiday.  I will be enjoying my first holiday with all three boys.  I hope we don't drive Jenny too crazy.

Be safe!

Happy Pi Day this Saturday!

In class today it was 'math-a-polooza' with an exploration of Quizzles (a type of checklist used to solve problems) an online exploration challenge of BEDMAS and the order of operations, and a trip into the world of diameter and radius...to help us get ready to celebrate Pi day (3.14 or March 14th) tomorrow.  Check out this fun video clip.

Just had an amazing presontation from two students from Carleton University about the brain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We learned about the 4 sections of the brain. We also learned about sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch. Fun fact: did you know that when you first see something it's upside down?!

Room 308 Stands Up in Sharing

Just a reminder to start that Literacy Logs are due each Friday.  We have had a lot of great growth in terms of the level of detail, and effort going into these over recent weeks.  I have told the class all year that this would be the time of year when it gets busier, and I have been holding them all more accountable for the details in their work since second term started.  Many are feeling the pressure, and most are rising to the occasion.  Please encourage your child to review their work before handing it in.  Recently they have improved at breaking ideas into new sentences.  We are struggling with conventions like spelling, and capitalization, which shows that they are not all reviewing their work.
Run on sentences are a recent problem, and the advice has been to look for repeated conjunctions in their work.  When the word 'and' occurs twice, just remove the second linking word, and start a new sentence.  In many cases this will work to break up run on sentences.
At least two pages should be written at this point in the year.  To put it in perspective, many  of the strong entries are three pages or more in those small books.  This is meant to reflect a week of work ( a few minutes a few times a week), not just one ten minute session of writing once a week.
Please save the date for May 8th.  This will be our School of Rock ten year anniversary concert date, at Nepean HS auditorium.  More information will follow as we get ready to celebrate.
This week our class presented twice at the sharing.  Both were remarkable in different ways.  The day before the sharing, in the last block of the day, we came together with students from 310, and practiced the song "Best Day of my Life" on the guitar, uke, and some percussion.  The next day we ended the sharing by performing it...and we totally rocked it!  They rose to the occasion, with very little prep, and showed what a talented group they are by making it sound fantastic.  Well done all around!
The other contribution was a month in the making, with the students drawing on the lessons they learned from the stories of MLK jr, Nelson Mandela, Malcolm X, and the issues raised during our anti bullying day.  This all helped them decide on issues in their world that they would take a stand for, and then they stated these in very heartfelt video clips, which we presented to the school in an edited video.  The issues they raised were wide ranging, and showed a depth of thought and character that reflected very well on them as a group.  I received many comments from parents and staff who were moved by the level of thought and compassion that the class expressed.  Topics ranged from animal rights, to human rights, gender equality, LGBT rights, same sex marriage, freedom of speech, clean water, healthy earth, an beyond.  It was a strong moment for the class.  I will make sure that everyone has a chance to view this video at a conference later this year.
Our 'Week of Work' is upon us.  I is not daunting in any way, other than students needing to do something every night at home, and return it to school.  It should take most students less than 15 min a night.  Please help your child be successful with this, as it is paving the way for more responsibility for completing tasks in the future.
If you are planning to be away prior to the break, please let me know so that I can plan for your child's absence.
