Explorations in Flight and Matter

The grade sixes have been exploring concepts in flight and properties of air. On this day they created homemade helicopters to model the way in which seeds are disbursed from maples and sycamores and other trees that reproduce via floating seeds.

Meanwhile, grade fives were exploring properties of matter. In this activity they were building molecules of matter out of its base elements. On their place mats they built models of water molecules, carbon dioxide molecules, oxygen molecules, and hydrogen peroxide to. In this activity gumdrops were used to represent atoms of each element.
