Song rewrites

Students in Room 308 have been looking at songs to decode meaning.  Now we are using them as the framework for some original poetry experiments.  They have been tasked with the rewriting of a song, which they will share in class on the date of our Poetry Slam (next week one day).  The assignment went home last week, and is at the bottom of this post.  Here are two songs we used as inspiration in class today.  One is a re-write of the other.  Ask your child about the story contained in the original.  It was an interesting topic for them...
American Pie...
The Saga Begins

Name:                Song Re-Write
Try to re write this well known chorus from a song.
Start by choosing something to chant in the repeating lines, and then build with simple lines talking about the topic.

Re-Written Lines
Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells

Jingle all the way

Oh, what fun it is to ride

In a one horse open sleigh

Jingle bells, jingle bells

Jingle all the way

Oh, what fun it is to ride

In a one horse open sleigh

Choose any song of your own and get a copy of the original lyrics.
Use the graphic organizer below to match up the original lines with the lines that you re-write.
Try to pick a theme for your song first.
Starting by re-writing the chorus is usually the easiest, and then work on making the verses to match the theme.
Your re-write is due at the beginning of next week in class.  If you can, you might bring a copy of the original recording to play for the class when we share.
